New book by New York Times Best Selling Author Chris Enss
showcases women’s role in railroad history.

When the last spike was hammered into the steel track of the Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869, at Promontory Point, Utah, Western Union lines sounded the glorious news of the railroad’s completion from New York to San Francisco. For more than five years an estimated four thousand men mostly Irish working west from Omaha and Chinese working east from Sacramento, moved like a vast assembly line toward the end of the track. Editorials in newspapers and magazines praised the accomplishment and some boasted that the work that “was begun, carried on, and completed solely by men.” The August edition of Godey’s Lady’s Book even reported “No woman had laid a rail and no woman had made a survey.” Although the physical task of building the railroad had been achieved by men, women made significant and lasting contributions to the historic operation. However, the female connection with railroading dates as far back as 1838 when women were hired as registered nurses/stewardesses in passenger cars. Those ladies attended to the medical needs of travelers and also acted as hostesses of sorts helping passengers have a comfortable journey. Beyond nursing and service roles, however, women played a larger part in the actual creation of the rail lines than they have been given credit for. Miss E. F. Sawyer became the first female telegraph operator when she was hired by the Burlington Railroad in Montgomery, Illinois, in 1872. Eliza Murfey focused on the mechanics of the railroad, creating devices for improving the way bearings on a rail wheel attached to train cars responded to the axles. Murfey held sixteen patents for her 1870 invention. In 1879, another woman inventor named Mary Elizabeth Walton developed a system that deflected emissions from the smokestacks on railroad locomotives. She was awarded two patents for her pollution reducing device. Their stories and many more are included in this illustrated volume celebrating women and the railroad. Iron Women: The Ladies Who Helped Build the Railroad by Chris Enss is now available everywhere.

«Chris Enss’ latest book on characters of the Old West is published by TwoDot Press»
Doc Holliday’s paramour, “Big Nose Kate”, could never get a publisher to give her the big bucks she demanded to tell the story of her life, but that didn’t mean she didn’t collect material she wanted to use in a biography. Over the fifty years Mary Kate Cummings, alias Big Nose Kate, traversed the West she saved letters from her family, musings she had written about her love interests, and stories of her time with the notorious John Henry Holliday.
In the new book According to Kate:  The Legendary Life of Big Nose Kate, Love of Doc Holliday by New York Times Bestselling author Chris Enss, the infamous soiled dove has her say.  Kate claims to have witnessed the Gunfight at the OK Corral and exchanged words with the likes of Wyatt Earp and Josephine Marcus. There’s no doubt she embellished her adventures, but that doesn’t take away from their historical importance. She was a controversial figure in a rough and rowdy territory. What she witnessed, the lifestyle she led, and the influential western people she met are fascinating details and represent a time period much romanticized.

«Chris Enss’ & Howard Kazanjian’s latest book, MOCHI’S WAR, is published     by TwoDot Press and now available.»

mochis war book cover

TwoDot Books, an imprint of Rowman and Littlefield,  announces the release of MOCHI’S WAR: THE TRAGEDY OF SAND CREEK by Chris Enss and Howard Kazanjian.

After the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864, one woman survived physically unarmed, but emotionally devastated by the destruction of her tribe and determined to avenge her dead relatives. Her story has rarely been told, and MOCHI’S WAR is the first book to tell it in full.

On November 28, 1964, Colonel John Chivington and his militia attacked a Cheyenne Indian village in southeastern Colorado. Between 150 and 200 Cheyenne Indians were estimated killed, nearly all elderly men, women and children. The events at Sand Creek motivated Mochi to embark on a decade long reign of terror. With each raid she remembered the horror of the massacre, and it goaded her on to terrible violence against those encroaching on Indian soil.  The war between the Indians and the government lasted ten years and ended with Mochi’s arrest an imprisonment in 1874 — the only woman ever to be incarcerated by the United States as a prisoner of war.

Latest book from Howard Kazanian & Chris Enss tells the tale of early picture-making in Hollywood at Republic Pictures

Take one well-oiled effective killing machine, add a familiar hero on the ground, in the air, and/or on horseback; stir in a ghastly end that’s surely impossible to escape, add action, add passion, made on a shoestring budget at breakneck speed, and you’ve got the recipe for Republic Pictures.

Exploding onto the movie scene in 1935, Republic Pictures brought the pop culture of the 30s and 40s to neighborhood movie houses.  Republic Pictures was the little studio in the San Fernando Valley where movies were made family style. A core of technicians, directors, and actors worked hard at their craft as Republic released a staggering total of more than a thousand films through the late 1950s.  It was home to John Wayne for thirty-three films. Always inventing, Republic brought a song to the West. It featured the West’s first singing cowboy. Republic brought a variety of action, adventure, and escape to neighborhood movie houses across America.

Although Nick is a handsome, successful New York business consultant, Mia finds training Nick to be frustrating until Nick takes an interest in her wheel-chair-bound son, Scotty, and helps him with a pumpkin carving contest. However, Nick disappoints Mia and Scotty by not showing up at the contest. To protect her son from further disappointment, Mia tries to keep Nick out of her and Scotty’s fragile life, and Nick must decide if staying in the small town of Wilsonville and eventually taking over his father’s business is worth giving up the lifestyle he once had in New York.  As Mia tries to get Scotty to return to physical therapy so he can walk again, she realizes that Nick may be the Christmas miracle she has been waiting for.
